Емоционално нестабилна личност се отличава с изразена тенденция да се действа импулсивно без оглед на последствията в съчетание с неустойчиво и капризно поведение. При тези личности настъпват остри изблици на гняв до насилие или поведенчески избухвания. Обикновено способността да се предвиждат или да се планират нещата е минимална. Хората, които са емоционално нестабилни имтат склонност да са много инпулсивни. Съществуват две основни форми на емоционално нестабилнатата личност:

  • Импулсивен тип – тук доминира емоционалната нестабилност и липсата на контрол над влеченията. Тези личности обикновено се определят като свръхагресивни. Те имат нестабилно отношение към околните. Към емоционално нестабилна личност спадат агресивна личност, гранична личност и експлозивна личност.
